Ground Zero Tournament @ The Prestige Hotel Vernon
This first-ever Gambit Tournament is an all-ages event, where the Gambit Board Game is going to be introduced to the Okanagan Valley.

Players will be given the rules during a pre-tournament orientation, so that all players are starting from Ground Zero, so that no player has an edge over the others.

Age categories are U-12, U-19 and Open, with cash prizes for each winner. All players will have a $10 entry fee. 

Spaces are limited to 128 per age category, so please book your spot early to avoid disappointment. 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM

Pen & Ink Illustration @ The Vernon Community Arts Centre
Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Explore illustration styles, developing ideas, composition, planning and mark-making using pen and ink. Students will complete at least one large ink drawing and several smaller drawings during the course of the class. Through application and discussion, students will develop an understanding of the elements and principals of drawing. This class is for people who have some experience drawing but want to take it further. (5 classes)
Supplies Needed: Basic 8×11 Sketchbook (preferably with a bit of texture/tooth, acid free and not too thin), 2-3 Pieces of Large/Poster Size/Good Quality Paper, 2 (or more) Black Pens (Jelly Roll are good), Fountain Pen (various nibs), Small Paintbrush, Bottle of Ink and Pencils.

Masters XC @ Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre

Sovereign Lake Nordic Club is excited to offer the very popular Masters Program again for the 2017/18 season that is organized and lead in large part by our team of volunteer coaches. The goal of the program is to introduce more Adults (19+ yr) to the joys of cross country skiing through a social, organized support network. All participants must be SLNC Season Pass Holders. The program STILL costs just $50!  10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

This program runs three times per week as per the included calendar and is open to all abilities.

Do you want more focussed technical training and some professional coaching?  Join us on every second Wednesday morning from 9-11:00am with Eric de Nys (experienced National Cross Country Team coach) for this great training opportunity.  Want even more? 3 weekly sessions available:

  • Sunday Morning (10:00am-12:00) Led by Volunteer Leaders

Beginner Pedal and Pint Fat Bike Rides @ Silver Star Mountain Resort
Join us every week throughout the season for a fun and challenging (at your level!) spin through the fat bike trails at SilverStar Mountain Resort followed by a relaxing beverage in the SilverStar village.
For Beginner Mountain Bike Riders: 

Join us every Sunday at 2:00pm throughout the season for a fun and easy ride on the green trails. This is a perfect program for someone that wants to experience a new winter sport but is not an experienced mountain bike rider. Our guides will lead you along the wide multi use green trails and possibly onto the easy single track trails winding through the forest.
 
WHERE: Meet at Brewer’s Pond Base
REGISTRATION: FREE with Trail Pass or Season Pass
Participants must REGISTER in advance (space is limited)
Registration closes at noon on scheduled ride dates.

More Watercolour @ The Vernon Community Arts Centre

Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Students will be presented with a more in-depth coverage of the basic watercolour theories and techniques that they learned in beginners classes. So– a re-enforcement of basics with some new info and techniques to help them hone their skills.  In-class demonstrations, discussions, critiques and hands on assignments will guide the student to developing their own style with this magical medium. (no class February 12 & March 19) 10 classes
Supplies Needed:
  • Paint – 1 tube of each: Permanent Rose, Winsor yellow, Winsor red, French Ultra Marine
    Paint Note: Inexpensive Chinese paints are available and fine to experiment with. The pigments are not colour fast and will not mix the way artist quality paints will.
  • Optional Paint – 1 tube of each: Pthalo blue, Cerulean Blue, Quinacridone gold, Winsor Violet, Alizarin Crimson, Pthalo green, Burnt sienna
    The above colours are suggested by your instructor; please talk to Gail concerning quality and quantity of products needed.
  • Brushes: 1” flat, No. 6 – 8 round (mid-size), rigger brush
  • Arches 140 lb. cold press watercolour paper, palette (large white plastic ice cream lid will do), water container (large rather than small), soft absorbent rag, pencil, white eraser, sketchbook, spray bottle

Intro to Wheel Throwing with Laurel Fredin (8 classes) 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Level: Beginner
This class is for those looking to learn the basics of working on the wheel. During your eight weeks you will learn the steps that go into creating finished pieces like mugs, vases, and bowls. Weekly demonstrations will keep you motivated and be sure to bring your sense of humor. Fee includes 8 free drop-in sessions to be used by the end of the course. Students should leave all rings, watches, bracelets etc. at home and wear clothing appropriate to getting muddy. Hair should be tied back. Students should bring an apron and an old bath towel. Price includes 1 bag of M340 clay, all other materials and the use of tools. Additional clay is available for purchase at the VCAC front desk.

These rides are aimed to flow at a fun and friendly pace encouraging lots of smiles and laughs along the way. After rolling back into the village everyone is encouraged to join us to celebrate our triumphs and unplanned dismounts over a refreshing warm or cold beverage.

Is art your passion? Are you thinking of pursuing it at a post-secondary level? Or maybe it’s just your favourite hobby? Come check out our TEEN DROP-IN program for ages 13-17! These drop-ins will be facilitated by artist Sam Hesketh, who can help with ideas and give pointers on a variety of mediums. Bring your own supplies, and use our tables and easels in our professional-grade studios. Meet like-minded artists all while preparing your artist portfolio and creating in a friendly environment! It’s only $2 per drop in and we’ll include a free one-year membership to keep you creating all year long.

Indigenous Cinema On Tour: Birth of a Family @ The ORL Vernon Branch
Join us for free showings of films from the National Film Board of Canada. Film starts at 6:30 pm.

Removed from their young Dene mother’s care as part of Canada’s infamous Sixties Scoop, Betty Ann, Esther, Rosalie and Ben were four of the 20,000 Indigenous children taken from their families between 1955 and 1985, to be either adopted into white families or to live in foster care. As the four siblings piece together their shared history, their connection deepens, bringing laughter with it, and their family begins to take shape.

U35’s is much more than a skate ski lesson; it’s a weekly evening opportunity that aims to invigorate your body and mind in the midst of weekday mayhem. U35’s is a weekly evening opportunity that brings together locals who want to learn new skills in an inclusive and encouraging environment. Led by local ski professional, Dudley Coulter, and his team of passionate and knowledgeable skiers, you’re sure to enjoy the program – whether you’re a beginner or intermediate skier.
So, come and “chill” with us this winter, you won’t regret it. All lessons are held on Thursday nights from 6:30-8pmunder the lights, and to the beats at the Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre. SLNC Stadium (follow the music!)

XC Supercamp @ The Silver Star Mountain Resort
XC Supercamp is for all ages, all abilities, and yes: all fitness levels! Whether you a competent advanced or a first time skier, our 105km of rolling terrain, exceptional grooming, professional coaching, and comprehensive camp program give you an inspiring Nordic experience. We offer a 3-day program starting Friday morning at 8:15AM. Our days on snow run 8:30-3:30 (full day) or 8:30-lunch (half day). Lunches are provided, and we offer awesome extras like Wine & yoga (Friday night) and a guest speaker (January - sports nutrition with Kira Sutherland, Australian Nutritionist) and social on Saturday night. The Vernon Community Arts Centre is excited to offer a broad range of classes for homeschool students in a studio setting! All classes are taught by our Youth Instructor and Emily Carr graduate, Samantha Hesketh.  9:30 AM to 10:30 AM
Our program for youth ages 4 - 6 runs on Fridays from 9:30am-10:30am (no class February 16). Sign up for one class or sign up for them all!
