What's Happening? Oct.14-20, 2017

Brrr - do you feel the chill in the air this week? Notice the skiff of snow on the hill tops? Safety first! - Have you got your snow tires on?

This week there is a lot of events featuring my Art teacher and friend Sveva Caetani who left us with a legacy of art, history and mystery... along with the Caetani Cultural Centre on Pleasant Valley Road.

Below is a snapshot of what's happening in the coming week.

October 14, 2017

Lumby Public Market @ Whitevalley Community Park
The Lumby Public Market is a seasonal Market that features owner-operated stalls and/or “day tables”. As a Public Market, we provide a showcase for local and area agricultural producers as well as artisans, crafters, musicians, home-based businesses and local entrepreneurs. It celebrates Lumby and area’s unique character and culture while serving its everyday shopping needs. 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
October 14 2017, 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM
Johnny Popper Farm Tours @ Davison Orchards
See for yourself how your food is grown!
Taking a ride through the farm on "Johnny Popper Train" is a fun, interactive way for you to experience our working farm.
Something new to discover in every season on the farm. The tour takes you by apple trees, plum trees and peach trees as well as tomatoes, peppers, corn, pumpkins and more. A traditional tour involves one stop where one of our farmers will show you the fields and the orchards and you can see, touch, smell (and sometimes even taste!) one of our in-season crops. The focus of the tour changes as the seasons do, but all year long our Farm Tours are a chance to have some fun while you learn the story behind your food.
Fun for all ages
Our tours have been designed with families in mind. Kids love to ride in the tractor drawn "train" made of apple bins. Parents appreciate the covered, padded seating and the fact that the kids and adults alike learn something new about their food and how it's grown.
Ticket Prices are $6 for adults (13 yrs and older), and $4 for children (2-12 yrs) and do not need to be reserved in advance - just come on up, buy a ticket, and enjoy your tour! We do recommend that groups reserve in advance to ensure enough seating is available on the tour.
October 14 2017, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Family Daze in the Corn Maze @ Historic O'Keefe Ranch
Bring the whole family for great fall activities at the O’Keefe Ranch. A brand new maze will be open and it's guaranteed to entertain with plenty of twists and turns and spooky scenes around every corner. Some of the historic buildings will be open and decorated and the General Store will be selling good ol’ fashioned Halloween candy. Kids can enjoy a run through the maze, try a pony or tractor ride, take part in an art activity, or a climb in the giant spider web. Grab a snack at one of the food trucks available to keep your energy going all day long! The cost is $10 per person or $30 for a family (up to 5 people).
This is a family friendly event – the corn maze is spooky but it does not have live actors, and the seasonal décor in the buildings is suitable for children to explore.

Vernon Film Society: The Trip to Spain @ Vernon Towne Theatre
After jaunts through northern England and Italy, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon embark on another deliciously deadpan culinary road trip. This time around, the guys head to Spain to sample the best of the country's gastronomic offerings in between rounds of their hilariously off-the-cuff banter. Over plates of pintxos and paella, the pair exchange barbs and their patented celebrity impressions, as well as more serious reflections on what it means to settle into middle age. As always, the locales are breathtaking, the cuisine to die for, and the humor delightfully devilish.

In concert, whether he is sharing the stage with a topnotch group of musical friends or touring the world as part of the famed Three Irish Tenors, McDermott continues to enchant audiences with his beautiful voice and sensitive renditions. Though time and travel have introduced him to a wealth of new material and experiences, he manages to incorporate that diversity into his performances, while retaining the beguiling sense of humour that endeared him to audiences from the beginning. This tour features songs from his latest release, Raised on Songs and Stories, and a variety of favourites from his vast recording catalogue.

A delectable evening of story and song, delivered with charm and grace by the consummate craftsman himself, John McDermott.

Farmer The Band:
Farmer The Band are multi tasking, multi instrumentalist, indie folksters based in southern BC. Their Americana – sorry, Canadiana – songwriting and storytelling has taken the new band twice across Canada. The duo’s folk roots music fills the stage with vocal harmonies, guitar, bass, harmonica, drums, percussion, and anything else that’s in arm’s (or foot’s) reach.

Tomek Maciaszek is a local, Vernon singer songwriter who retired from the punk scene to pursue a life of honest folk. Drawing heavily upon the wisdom and vocal style of Steve Earle, he continues to explore the oddities of human existence through 6 strings and the will to use them.
