Introduction to Women's Writing Circles @ Caetani Cultural Centre
Two 2 hour sessions
Cost: $65
Caetani Centre Library

Women’s Writing Circles are a highly connected live writing format in which we show up, do a quick check in, then dive into a series of timed writing prompts.
Janelle will share the prompt, we’ll write for 15 minutes, do a round of reading, then dive into the next round. We write like mad and generate magic – in our writing our connection as a group and in our lives.
Find out what this format is like and try it out with this 2 session series, then, if you love it, you can sign up for the longer series here.
Click to check out Janelle’s podcast, Janelle’s blog and more about Janelle.

Why do families continue to fascinate on the big screen? Maybe because, amid the superheroes and fantasies that dazzle us, great films about family mirror our own lives, illuminating us at our best while reassuring us about our imperfections. Based on her own screenplay, which won a coveted Nicholl Fellowship from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this is a story of a family drawing closer even as illness threatens to tear it apart.

Book Club @ Vernon Public Art Gallery
Mixing art and literature, this group will meet at the gallery for a tour of the current exhibition Observer Observed by Meghan Krauss and a conversation about the book The Pearl by John Steinbeck. We are pleased to partner with the Vernon branch of the Okanagan Regional Library for this new endeavor! Please inquire at the Library for hard copy and eBook availability. Tea and Coffee will be provided. Suggested $5 donation, free for VPAG members. For more information please contact our Education Coordinator Alexandra at 250-545-3173 or [email protected]
About the Exhibition:
Through carefully composed photomontages, Krauss explores how tourists interact with natural attractions. Posing for the perfect profile picture, selfie, or vacation photo, tourists are captures on location in Banff, AB and various locations throughout Iceland. Krauss’s images show the effect of landscape tourism amplified. Often considered ‘the wild’, rugged, and exotic, these locations are overrun by Krauss’s tourists. Her work is not only an exploration of photography in the age of post-production, but also an examination of modern attitudes towards treasured landscapes and our interaction with them.
About the Book:
Steinbeck’s story of the Pearl follows pearl-diver Kino and his experiences following the dramatic discovery of a large and perfect pearl – the pearl of the world. Based of a Mexican folk tale, Steinbeck’s telling of Kino’s journey is rife with themes of greed, family, and perseverance, and our relationship with the world around us. This novella was originally published in 1947.

Jack Semple @ Prestige Vernon Lodge and Conference Centre
Tickets are $30 and $25 for members
Semple grew up on a farm north of Regina, Saskatchewan. He started his musical career playing with various Regina-based bands, and later relocated to Toronto in the late 1980s to become the lead guitarist of The Lincolns, a popular funk and rhythm and blues band. He left the band after two years and returned to Regina to pursue a solo career and to spend more time with his family. After his move back to Regina, Semple contributed to television and music scores and appeared in the title role of Guitarman, a 1994 television movie.
Semple also commenced a solo recording career that has resulted in the release of ten albums. In 1992, Semple came to national prominence through winning the MuchMusic “Guitar Wars” contest. Semple has been twice nominated, in 1999 and 2000, for a Gemini Award for his soundtrack work on the television series Incredible Story Studio. Semple won a Juno award in 1991 for best roots recording. He has won two Western Canadian music awards for “Qu’Appelle” and “In the Blue Light”. Tomie Seo: Opening Reception @ Caetani Cultural Centre
Tomie Seo’s work depicts the hidden political and social structures of the world by focusing on racism, gender and identity - those who are repressed and victimized.
She believes that the phenomena of this world is intertwined and related - like light and shadow, cause and effect - and often juxtaposes opposite images through photo-realistic drawing, painting, video and sculpture with electronics to create interactive installations which represent a diorama or map of a whole structure or system.
As part of her exhibition, she’s inviting people to come and take part in her free Community Utopian Drawing Project, which is an invitation to enjoy drawing and using art as a communication tool, to express feelings and identities.
Bring a sense of playful fun, curiosity and a friend or two!
