The Vernon Folk Roots Society Presents: Celeigh Cardinal Trio @ The Knox Presbyterian Church
Music awards for Indigenous Artist of the Year, we are proud to present the Celeigh Cardinal Trio. Celeigh Cardinal is a prairie girl through and through. Her heartfelt, biographical songs are carried by a voice that harkens to the golden era of jazz and blues. This Métis singer/songwriter is easily one of the finest vocalists to hail from the Peace Country. A Celeigh Cardinal performance is a profound, soulful triumph of songs that blend roots, folk, rock and pop. Her voice at once evokes a gentleness and control which can turn to raucous, gut-wrenching, twisted, turn-yourself-inside-out blues within a single phrase. In May of 2017, Celeigh was the recipient of a “REVEAL Indigenous Arts Award” from the Hnatyshyn Foundation in Manitoba. In 2016, she received an “ATB Listens” grant from ATB Financial and participated in the (Re)Claim program at the Banff Centre for the Arts.
Celeigh has also received a Youth Role Model Award from the Spirit Seekers Conference in Grande Prairie, and was appointed the Cultural Ambassador for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games. She is a passionate performer who can draw an emotional response with her deliberate words and rich contralto voice. She is currently based out of Edmonton, Alberta and continues to perform alongside her duo, trio and with her band.

Guiseppe Verdi – Messa da requiem

Of all the musical settings of the Latin Mass for the Dead, Verdi’s ‘Requiem’ is the most iconic. By turns dramatically terrifying and transcendent, it is often called ‘an opera in disguise’. With four of Canada’s leading operatic soloists, a massed choir of 150 voices and the full power of the OSO, this performance will deliver an exhilarating experience. November 2018 marks the centenary of Armistice Day and we commemorate this historic occasion with the Okanagan premiere of this masterpiece.

Fall, 2018: PROSE
OCTOBER 16 to DECEMBER 4
Tuesday Evenings, 6:00 to 9:00pm, Caetani Library

Classes will be a mixture of discussions about contemporary composition in prose, demonstrations concerning both writing and editing and finding the right shapes for fiction or memoir or non-fiction, and critiquing sessions that will focus on class members’ work.
Because I am helplessly addicted to reading contemporary literature, my hope is that every member of this class will be refining skills that are current, professional and aimed at seeking an audience.
This is the ideal class for writers who are working away on her or his own and could use the support of a focused and professional community of writers, especially if she or he is in the middle of a manuscript. I am just re-engaging on the writing of a large novel myself called, tentatively, The Kitchen Sessions, and because of that, teaching this class will be timely for me as it will force me to articulate the kinds of compositions I am re-engaging in.
If you are interested in exploring my career as a professional writer, teacher and editor so you understand my background and interests in prose better, please visit my website: www.johnlent.ca

Vernon Film Society Transit @ Galaxy Cinemas Vernon
Director: Christian Petzold
Cast: Franz Rogowski, Paula Beer, Godehard Giese
Year: 2018
Runtime: 101 minutes
Country: Germany, France
Language: German, French, (With English subtitles)
Rating: Not yet rated
German troops are fast approaching Paris. Georg, a German refugee, escapes to Marseille in the nick of time. In his luggage, he carries the documents of an author, Weidel, who has taken his own life in fear of his persecutors. Those documents include a manuscript, letters and visa assurance from the Mexican embassy.
In Marseille, only those who can prove they will leave, may remain. Visas for possible host countries, transit visas, and those scarce tickets for passage by ship are much needed. Georg has memorized Weidel's papers and assumes his identity. He delves into the quasi-existence of flight: refugee chatter in the corridors of a small hotel, the consulates, cafés and bars that line the harbor... He befriends Driss, the son of his comrade Heinz, who died on the run. Why move on at all? Are new beginnings possible elsewhere anyway?
Everything changes when Georg falls in love with the mysterious Marie. Is it devotion or calculation that has led her to share her life with a doctor, Richard, before journeying on in search of her husband? He's said to have surfaced in Marseille in possession of a Mexican visa for him and his wife.

Rob Dinwoodie and Friends presents A Cowboy Christmas Carol @ Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre
What do you get when you cross Ebeneezer Scrooge with the Wild West? You’ll find out at the Cowboy Christmas Carol. Vancouver actor Dave Longworth puts a western twist on this Dickens tale as Jeb, a calloused old cowboy, is transformed on Christmas eve.
Cowboy singer/songwriter Rob Dinwoodie and his western band Open Range will tastefully perform original and traditional songs as this classic story is portrayed in a unique way. Together with Ken Mather, author, poet and historian, they will take you back to a simpler time, when Christmas was marked by horse-drawn sleighs, family gatherings, and country dances.
Joining the band for the evening is the talented Anjuli Dynna, whose fiddle playing will immediately bring a smile to your face. From fast-paced, toe-tapping jigs to thoughtful and reflective songs of the season, this show will make Christmas one you’ll remember for years to come!
Get your tickets now for this memorable evening of song, story, and drama that your whole family will enjoy!
