Cosmic Throat Singer Matthew Kocel “Words seem so deficient for explaining the depth of experience we all felt... I was being moved by sound, my whole body was light and vibrating.” — Vancouver Yoga Review
Imagine floating in an ocean of sacred sound... vibration so profound it seems to take on qualities of form, texture and color. It’s hard to believe these sounds come from a human. The harmonic overtones of his voice resonate to the core of your being, taking you on a journey beyond time and space. The effect is often compared to sacred plant medicines – and has been described as healing for the Earth and the heart of humanity. This is your opportunity to experience pure bliss in an intimate setting with internationally renowned throat singer/sound healer Matthew Kocel. Based in Vancouver BC, Matthew Kocel is a man on a mission to inspire healing and peace through the universal language of sacred sound. In the last year alone he has brought this vision- inducing music to France, New York, the Western United States and Canada. Achieving recognition as an emerging leader in the world sound healing movement, Matthew is a committee member of the Global Wellness Institute Sound Healing initiative.

About the artist:

If a line exists between classical and electronic, between ancient and new, synthetic and organic, Kytami has sliced them all using only a violin bow... Through an alchemy of classical, fiddle styles fused with the heavy bass elements of DnB, Dubstep and Hip Hop, Kytami has developed a steadily growing reputation for her dynamic performances.
This girl doesn't just play shows, she detonates dance floors. Kytami is internationally renowned for one thing: she rocks the fiddle like a woman possessed... and the audience dances to match.
From Germany to Singapore and Joshua Tree Festival to Shambhala, one thing is affirmed at Kytami concerts time and again: If you dare witness this violin diva take the stage, be prepared to wear through not only the soles of your dancing shoes but perhaps the version of reality you brought to the door.

Writing Through Grief with Janelle Hardy @ Caetani Cultural Centre
Writing Through Grief is about witnessing and allowing for the full range of feelings that come with loss.
It’s hard to grieve fully and deeply when grieving is not honoured or supported, and when the people and culture around you feel so uncomfortable with your feelings and their own. How do we grieve when we’ve never seen anyone go through a healthy grieving process? How do we grieve when we can’t cry around our loved ones? How do we grieve when we don’t know how?
Writing Through Grief is a discovery of the beauty that comes on the other side of grief. The sparkling moments of joy and connection, all of which are only possible because of the grieving that has been done – the crying of tears, the anger, the sadness, the acceptance of how unfair life can be. It is through honouring our grief that we come to understand and honour our joy better.
In this series we’ll use a writing circle format with creative writing prompts to explore and move through your grief in a deep, kind and joyful way.

Fall, 2018: PROSE
OCTOBER 16 to DECEMBER 4
Tuesday Evenings, 6:00 to 9:00pm, Caetani Library

Classes will be a mixture of discussions about contemporary composition in prose, demonstrations concerning both writing and editing and finding the right shapes for fiction or memoir or non-fiction, and critiquing sessions that will focus on class members’ work.
Because I am helplessly addicted to reading contemporary literature, my hope is that every member of this class will be refining skills that are current, professional and aimed at seeking an audience.
This is the ideal class for writers who are working away on her or his own and could use the support of a focused and professional community of writers, especially if she or he is in the middle of a manuscript. I am just re-engaging on the writing of a large novel myself called, tentatively, The Kitchen Sessions, and because of that, teaching this class will be timely for me as it will force me to articulate the kinds of compositions I am re-engaging in.
If you are interested in exploring my career as a professional writer, teacher and editor so you understand my background and interests in prose better, please visit my website: www.johnlent.ca

Defeating the German Army in 1918 Presentation @ Greater Vernon Museum & Archives
Just in time for Remembrance Day, the Greater Vernon Museum & Archives will host a presentation by Prof. Howard Hisdal entitled “Defeating the German Army in 1918: The 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles and the Hundred Days Campaign from Amiens to Mons” as part of the museum’s Speaker Series. The November 7th talk will also complement the museum’s latest exhibition, Finish the Fight! Vernon in the Great War.
The presentation by Prof. Hisdal, CD, MA, Chair of the History Department of Okanagan College, looks at the last hundred days of the First World War which ended on November 11th, 1918.  The viewpoint is that of the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles, a regiment recruited in the Okanagan and Victoria, and led by Lieutenant Colonel Chalmers Johnston, a militia officer from Vernon.  Prof. Hisdal will look at the tactics and leadership that made the 2nd CMR and the entire Canadian Corps into a highly efficient fighting machine that drove back the German Army and helped win the war.
Prof. Howard Hisdal, CD, MA, graduated from Royal Roads Military College, Victoria, and Royal Military College, Kingston.  He earned his Master of Arts degree at Carleton University.  He has 25 years of military service; 18 of those years as an officer in the British Columbia Dragoons, the descendant of the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles.  He retired as a captain in 2014.  The “CD” stands for Canadian Forces Decoration for honourable service.  Howard has taught history at Okanagan College since 2005 and is the chair of the History Department.  He is also the Vice-President of the Okanagan Military Museum Society in Kelowna and on the board of directors for the Kelowna Museums Society.
As space is limited in the museum, please call 250-542-3142 to pre-register for the November 7th presentation from 7pm to 9pm. Admission is $5/person, at the door. For more information, call, visit www.vernonmuseum.ca or find us on Facebook.
