Law of the Land: An Electrifying Comedy @ The Caravan Farm Theatre
A fast-paced musical farce about energy projects, set in a fictional BC town – a place where coyotes morph into men, cowboys fall in love with environmentalists, crows wax philosophical, and the animals put man on trial. First produced in 1982, Law of the Land is a Caravan Classic, featuring the company’s trademark blend of mask, music, physical comedy, and political satire.
Here in beautiful Black Creek, BC, the Grand Opening of the Black Creek Coal Fired Thermal Generating Power Plant is one day away. The Energy Minister and a delegation from Russia, China and the USA have descended to tour the plant (and do a little hunting on the side). But some folks are not happy about it: Clara’s ranch sits right next door, and she isn’t moving, even though her ranch hands have long since gone to work for the new plant. Hattie the scientist is worried about fluorine levels but no one is listening. Brenda the police officer is busy unravelling a terrorist plot, while Beaver, Cougar, and Deer are having nervous breakdowns. It’s a recipe for a referendum! Add two luckless ranch hands, the Lone Ranger, and a wily old Coyote with a plan…. and you get an Energy Crisis of epic proportions.

Law of the Land is a sharp-witted comedy for all ages. There is a ticket price for everyone’s pocket, from Early Bird Specials (Book by July 3rd and SAVE) Pay What You Can Tuesdays, and accessible Youth prices, so you can bring the whole family!

Our theatre is an EVENT! Bring your tailgate picnics or sidle up to our concession for great Okanagan food, beer and wines. Come on out to the farm and see what all the fuss is about!

Brought to you by an artistic team assembled from across the country and beyond!

COME ONE, COME ALL!
PLEASE NOTE: The use of cameras and recording devices during the performance is strictly prohibited.

The Leisure Seeker @ The Towne Cinema
Canadian acting legend Donald Sutherland and Academy Award winner Helen Mirren star in this wise and witty road movie set in today's divided United States. The English-language debut of Italian director Paolo Virzì (Like Crazy), The Leisure Seeker takes an entire country as its canvas and a couple of aging adventurers as its lovable heroes.
Ella (Mirren) is dying of cancer. John (Sutherland) is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Neither is interested in quietly fading away surrounded by nurses and machines just to needlessly prolong a winnowing life. With the end of the road in sight, Ella opts to tune up their vintage RV and hit the highway, travelling from Boston to Florida with John behind the wheel. He may not always be cognizant of the nature of their trip — she assures him it's just a vacation — but he gets into the spirit. As they pass through cities and towns they see how much the world they know has changed for ill or for good. And they try to leave it on a graceful note.

Amélie Brindamour Artist Talk
Don't miss Amélie's artist talk at the Caetani Cultural Centre!

The project In Oscillation intends on materializing visually the symbiotic and intelligent systems between trees and fungi referred to as the mycorhizal network. Through many hikes in areas around the Okanagan Valley, a dozen mushrooms were picked, then molded and cast in transparent resin with an LED light encased inside. Experimentations were made to connect those lights to a battery-powered electric circuit to turn them on, and for them to act as a simple synthesizer producing sounds, which can be activated by touch. During the residency, a prototype is being created that represents a small part of the installation, as well as a model of the whole circuit and how it would look in an exhibition space. The electronic circuit will be completed in September at the artist-run centre Avatar in Quebec City, in order to show it publicly in 2019.

The artist would like to thank the Vernon Outdoors Club, the North Okanagan Naturalist Club, and other Vernon residents for welcoming her in their hikes and sharing their knowledge of mushrooms and the region.
This event is free and open to the public!

Indigenous Poetry Night @ Gallery Vertigo
Join us the last Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. for indigenous poetry nights at Gallery Vertigo.
Margo Tamez and Debbra Butler aim to inspire indigenous peoples in the North Okanagan to connect with their ancestral tradition of storytelling by participating in the indigenous poetry nights at Gallery Vertigo which are held the last Thursday of each month,
“Poetry for us is a very important tool and method for getting down to key stories, truths and remembering,” Tamez added. “Memory, globally, is a big area of social inquiry. The value of human memory, that’s something important to capture and nurture. For indigenous peoples to be able to uncover what happened to us, that’s very important for creativity.”
Margo Tamez, of Apache origin born and raised in southwestern Texas, moved to the Okanagan in 2010 to teach and contribute to the expansion of UBCO’s indigenous studies degree program.
Debbra Butler, who is of Thompson indigenous ancestry from Lytton, B.C. attends UBCO, seeking a Bachelor’s Degree, Majoring in Indigenous Studies.
“Art influences health and well-being. People can sort of recreate their lives through self-determination,” Tamez said. “We want to create a safe space for indigenous peoples who want to craft their voice and vision through poetry and creative writing.”

She Hangs Brightly @ Lorenzo's Cafe
She Hangs Brightly was born within the musty, crumbling walls of ‘the stone room’ (the rehearsal space in the basement of a century old farmhouse) on a cold night in January, 2016 in Vernon, BC. Appropriate beginnings for a band heavy with mood and a distinct sound of west coast psychedelia.

The band was started as a collaborative writing project between singer Eryn Kleyh and guitarist Dean Gordon-Smith (formerly of Redfish). Progress was steady but slow. Drummer Ken McGregor, a friend of Gordon-Smith’s with decades of playing time together, was added in spring of 2017. Things started to really move when Kleyh officially moved back to her hometown of Vernon, and
bass player Luke Kowalski was added to the line up in November, 2017.

Driven by vocal power and emotional delivery, you can hear the influence of singers like Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick, early Tina Turner, the ever inventive Cat Power, moody Nancy Sinatra, and the band’s namesake Mazzy Star. Instrumentally the band pulls from classics like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The White Stripes and the ever-present Beatles. Gordon-Smith’s organic and atmospheric playing style takes Kleyh’s original acoustic compositions to new levels. Lyrically you will connect with Kleyh’s personal journey as an artist, trials in love, true friendships, and the struggles that come with trying to find your way back home. Instrumentally you will be transported to the lush landscapes of Western Canada by textured guitar that sparkles, a bassline you feel in your bones, and a drum beat to pound it all home. She Hangs Brightly is music you will experience with all of your senses.

She Hangs Brightly will be on the road in 2018, touring mostly Western Canada as well as recording their debut album at home in Vernon.
